On Monday 16 January 2017, Town Hall Seattle hosted a community reading of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Town Hall Seattle Executive Director Wier Harman described the letter’s standing in King’s work: “If I Have a Dream is a flickering North Star, the Letter from Birmingham Jail reveals Dr. King as a spiritual leader, a master tactician of political organizing, and a fearless truth-teller.”
After a brief introduction, eight members of the community read portions of the complete letter. The large audience acknowledged and affirmed the power and eloquence of King’s words.
