Procession honoring Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel McCartney
On Tuesday 9 January 2018, law enforcement officers, government officials, and members of the public gathered at the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office in Tacoma, Washington, to pay their respects to Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel McCartney as his body was taken to Mountain View Memorial. Law enforcement officers escorted his body, and citizens lined the route.
Deputy McCartney was killed Sunday 7 January 2017 after responding to a call indicating a disturbance at a home. McCartney chased two suspects, exchanged gunfire with one or both, and was mortally wounded in the process.
I recommend reading the reporting from The News Tribune and from Q13Fox’s Brandi Kruse. The details are difficult to read: McCartney, an experienced officer, U.S. Navy veteran, husband, and father of 3 pursued the two suspects by himself. One of Kruse’s tweets mentioned that Henry Carden, the suspect who was found dead at the scene, was wearing body armor. Law enforcement officials believe that McCartney shot Carden several times, and that most of the shots “struck Carden’s body armor.” Carden then shot himself in the head. (Update: Another good link for this story – Steven Dunkelberger’s Tacoma Weekly post.)
NEW DETAILS: The suspect who died during a gun battle with a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy earlier this week was wearing body armor and shot himself in the head, officials said.
