A couple of weeks ago I sat down and hammered out a short story that might actually be closer to a few scenes in a play or short film. Call it what you will. The idea for it has been floating around in my head for a while…this idea that I’ve never seen the country this divided and tense. For the first time in my life, I think the idea of wide-spread domestic political violence is a possibility.**
It was Kennedy’s announcement that he’s retiring from the Supreme Court that prompted me to sit down and get my thoughts on paper. I don’t think it would take much to really unravel things. I wanted to tackle those thoughts from the perspective of an entity or group realizing that it is wildfire season in America, figuratively and literally. Strike a match to some well-placed kindling, and we might just tear ourselves apart. I hope that possibility remains firmly within the realm of fiction.
If you’re up for reading it, here’s the link. It’s called Precipice. That link should work, but I haven’t linked to a tag very often. Here’s a link to my Writing page. (It’s mostly safe for work…there are a couple of F-bombs in the story, so if your work might react poorly to that, maybe best to save it for after work.)
** Obviously, political violence in the United States is not new. Exhibit A – the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. I’m talking about widespread, ideological violence.
